Government Still Discussing How Prabowo Would Mediate Iran–United States Conflict
Jakarta — The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kementerian Luar Negeri, Kemlu RI) has said the government is still discussing the mechanism by which President Prabowo Subianto might mediate in the Iran–United States conflict. Director-General for Asia, Pacific, and Africa at Kemlu RI, Santo Darmosumarto, said the details of Indonesia’s role are still being discussed with all involved parties, particularly the countries currently in conflict. ‘Of course, the details about the role must be discussed with all countries involved, especially those currently in conflict,’ he said at a press conference on Friday (6 March 2026). Additionally, Indonesia continues diplomatic communications with them, ‘to determine how Indonesia can play a neutral mediation role,’ he asserted. Earlier, Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning (ATR) Nusron Wahid revealed that President Prabowo Subianto’s potential mediation between the US and Iran had the backing of Middle Eastern leaders. Nusron said the statement was made during Prabowo’s gathering and discussion with clerics and senior leaders of Islamic organisations at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday (5 March 2026) night. ‘It was explained that the President’s efforts have received support from other Middle Eastern country leaders,’ Nusron said after the meeting on Monday. Nusron noted that at least two countries back Prabowo’s move: Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia’s aspiration for peace aligns with the wishes of Arab states. ‘The President, together with seven leaders of countries within the Group of Eight, desires peace. We must not let the war drag on, especially in Iran or in the Gulf region,’ Nusron said.
