Government sets Eid al-Fitr on Saturday, 21 March 2026
Based on calculations and the absence of the visible crescent, it has been agreed that 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijri falls on Saturday, 21 March 2026. Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) of the Republic of Indonesia, has officially set the Eid al-Fitr holiday for 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijri on Saturday, 21 March 2026. “Based on calculations and the absence of the visible crescent, it has been agreed that 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijri falls on Saturday, 21 March 2026,” said the Minister of Religious Affairs (Menag) of the Republic of Indonesia, Nasaruddin Umar, during a press conference at the Sidang Isbat for 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijri at the Kemenag office in Jakarta on Thursday. The Minister explained that the decision was made following the results of the rukyatul hilal conducted by the Kemenag’s Hisab Rukyat Team, which indicated that the crescent’s height across all regions of Indonesia did not meet the criteria set by the Ministers of Religious Affairs from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore (MABIMS). Referring to the MABIMS criteria, the start of the Hijri month is determined if the crescent has a minimum height of 3 degrees and an elongation or angular distance between the two celestial bodies of 6.4 degrees. “In determining the start of the lunar month, especially in months involving Islamic worship and concerning the needs of many people, the state facilitates this through the Sidang Isbat as a form of the presence of ulil amri or the government,” stated Minister Nasaruddin Umar. Additionally, Minister Nasaruddin emphasised that Kemenag had received information from the rukyatul hilal teams at 117 points across Indonesia, confirming that the crescent was not visible. Consequently, he said, the method applied is istikmal, or completing and rounding the month to 30 days. Minister Nasaruddin Umar hopes that with the establishment of the Sidang Isbat results, the entire Muslim community in Indonesia can celebrate Eid al-Fitr with full joy and as a symbol of unity among Indonesian Muslims. He also urged all Indonesian people to maintain security, peace, and order during the Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri celebrations.
