JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Religious Affairs has set Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijri to fall on Wednesday (May 27th, 2026).

The decision was made during an isbat meeting after the government combined the results of astronomical calculations and new moon observations from 88 monitoring points spread across Indonesia.

“It was agreed that the date of 1 Zulhijah 1447 Hijri will fall on Monday, May 18th, 2026, and therefore Eid al-Adha 1447 H, which is the 10th of Zulhijah 1447 Hijri, will fall on Wednesday, May 27th, 2026,” said Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar in a press conference at the Ministry of Religious Affairs office, Jakarta, Sunday (May 17th, 2026).

The new moon observation was carried out jointly by the Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Religious Affairs of regencies/cities, religious courts, Islamic community organizations, and a number of related agencies.

The locations for the new moon observation included observatories, beaches, rooftops of buildings, monitoring towers, to strategic mosques in various regions to ensure the accuracy of the observations.

Before the isbat meeting was held, the Ministry of Religious Affairs first held a seminar on the position of the new moon involving experts in Islamic astronomy and representatives of Islamic community organizations.

The isbat meeting also involved various elements, such as the BMKG (Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics), BRIN (National Research and Innovation Agency), the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), the Indonesian Ulema Council, Islamic mass organizations, academics, to experts in Islamic astronomy.

Based on astronomical calculations, ijtima’ (conjunction) occurred on May 17th, 2026 at around 03:00.55 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

When the new moon observation was carried out, the position of the new moon was estimated to be above the horizon with an altitude of between 3 degrees 37 minutes and 6 degrees 54 minutes.

“The new moon observation is carried out extensively in various regions of Indonesia so that the results of the observations obtained are more accurate and can be the basis for decision-making in the isbat meeting,” he said.
