JAKARTA – The target of building solar power plants (PLTS) with a total capacity of 100 gigawatts (GW) by 2029 has prompted the government to seek investors from China. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto invited Chinese companies to invest in the project during a meeting with China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao in Shanghai on Friday (17/7/2026).

The government had previously involved Chinese investment in the construction of the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant. Airlangga used that project as a reference to open up cooperation on other solar power projects. The government also aims to develop the solar panel industry and establish a domestic solar energy supply chain.

The investment invitation comes against the backdrop of substantial trade and investment relations between the two countries. Indonesia-China trade value reached 154.6 billion US dollars in 2025, with an average growth of 7.24 per cent throughout 2021–2025. In the same year, Chinese investment in Indonesia reached nearly 8.1 billion US dollars, or about 13 per cent of total foreign investment.

Beyond the solar power project, the meeting discussed cooperation under the Two Countries Twin Parks (TCTP) scheme. Indonesia and China have signed 30 memoranda of understanding under this scheme, with an estimated investment of Rp37.1 trillion. “The various memoranda of understanding that have been signed need to be followed up immediately into real investment,” Airlangga said in a statement on Saturday (18/7/2026).

Airlangga also encouraged Indonesian and Chinese companies to form joint ventures to run the TCTP projects. The government has requested that China’s Ministry of Commerce direct its companies to invest in Indonesian industrial and commercial zones. The government is also preparing the Danantara Indonesia sovereign wealth fund as a partner in the two countries’ investment projects.
