Government reveals strategy to maintain healthy telecoms industry and accelerate 5G rollout

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria has revealed the government’s approach to creating a healthy climate for the telecommunications industry, thereby accelerating the deployment of more 5G networks in Indonesia. One key measure is adjusting investment costs for industry players in line with current market conditions. “We are trying to provide a healthy environment and ecosystem by implementing regulations that take into account the condition of the telecommunications industry. We are trying to reduce regulatory costs. We want to ensure this industry runs well with healthy financial conditions,” Nezar said in a confirmed statement in Jakarta on Friday. According to him, a healthy telecommunications industry is an important prerequisite for operators to continue investing in the construction of new-generation networks. Therefore, the government is striving to present policies that provide certainty for the industry while encouraging the acceleration of national digital transformation. The government continues to observe the dynamics of business competition so that operators have room to expand investment, improve network quality, and deliver increasingly better services to the public. “We want to ensure this industry runs well with healthy financial conditions. We are paying attention to the decline in revenue. But now I think with these three players, we can make the Indonesian telecommunications industry healthy,” he said. The government’s commitment to supporting the telecommunications industry in achieving healthy business competition was also conveyed by Nezar during an audience with the President Director and Chief Executive Officer of one of Indonesia’s mobile operators, XLSMART. In the meeting held on Thursday, Nezar appreciated XLSMART’s commitment to accelerating the implementation of 5G networks in Indonesia. According to him, expanding 5G service coverage will strengthen digital connectivity while improving the quality of the public’s experience in utilising high-speed internet services. In addition to expanding the network, Nezar stressed that the success of 5G implementation is ultimately measured by the benefits felt by the community. He stated that improving service quality must be the main goal of every new technology investment. Therefore, Nezar said the government continues to support all forms of investment and collaboration with industry players that are in line with the national digital transformation agenda. Synergy between the government and operators is considered key to accelerating the equitable distribution of high-speed internet access while increasing Indonesia’s digital competitiveness. “We greatly appreciate your cooperation and support. And I believe we can lead a great leap towards excellence to become one of the most significant players for Indonesia and Malaysia. And we will support you all,” Nezar concluded.
