Government Ready to Discuss Asset Forfeiture Bill, Awaits DPR Initiative

The government has stated it is prepared to discuss the Asset Forfeiture Bill (RUU Perampasan Aset) with the House of Representatives (DPR), but is still waiting for the DPR to take the lead as the designated initiator. Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas explained that the DPR’s Commission III is currently entering its sitting period and is conducting public consultations to gather input from various stakeholders. He made these remarks following the MPR Annual Session and the Joint Session of the DPR and DPD at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Friday (14/8/2026).

“Regarding the Asset Forfeiture Bill, as you can see, Commission III is just beginning its sitting period today. It will be opened by the Deputy Speaker. Commission III is currently conducting public consultations, listening to input from all stakeholders. And we are waiting; the President’s instruction to the Minister of Law is clear, to expedite this,” he said.

Supratman explained that the government had previously prepared a draft of the Asset Forfeiture Bill. However, based on a political agreement, the DPR will be the party to initiate the regulation. “The government, in the previous administration, already had a draft. But this is a political agreement that the DPR wants to initiate it. In the National Legislation Programme, the initiative lies with the DPR,” Supratman stated.

However, Supratman was not yet willing to disclose the government’s stance on the substance of the bill. He stated that the government would convey its position after the DPR submits its initiative proposal. “I do not want to comment on the substance yet because the government certainly has its own stance, as the President’s direction to us is clear. But we are waiting for the DPR’s initiative proposal first, then the government will discuss it together, including the Ministry of Law,” he said.

He also confirmed that the Ministry of Law is ready to be involved in the discussion of the Asset Forfeiture Bill once the DPR’s initiative process is underway. “But because this is a DPR initiative proposal, we are waiting. I am confident the DPR will soon submit the initiative, and we are ready to discuss it with the DPR,” Supratman clarified.
