Government Raises Beef Prices at Producer Level

Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan has announced an increase in the highest retail reference price for live cattle and buffalo meat. “Although distant, the geopolitical war does indeed affect transportation. Therefore, some imported food items are also making adjustments,” Zulkifli stated at the Coordinating Ministry for Food office on Wednesday, 22 April 2026.

The reference purchase price for live cattle is now Rp59,000 per kilogram, an increase of Rp1,000 from the previous range of around Rp58,000 per kilogram. Despite the rise at the producer level, Zulkifli stated that there is no change in consumer-level purchase prices in the market. He assured that beef prices in the market are sold at Rp130,000–140,000 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, the retail price for buffalo meat has now risen to Rp90,000 per kilogram from the previous Rp80,000 per kilogram. Zulkifli said the significant increase in buffalo meat prices is influenced by a surge in demand. “There, it has also risen from 2.9 to 3.6,” said the PAN politician.

The retail price changes have occurred about two years since the National Food Agency set the reference purchase price at the producer level for beef and buffalo meat on 25 September 2024.

In National Food Agency Regulation Number 12 of 2024, the government set the reference purchase price (HAP) at the producer level for live cattle beef in the range of Rp56,000–58,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, the reference selling price for buffalo meat at the consumer level is Rp80,000 per kilogram.
