Government Presents Evidence of Sustained Public Purchasing Power
The government believes the purchasing power of the Indonesian people remains well maintained, as evidenced by the continued strong growth in sales of durable goods. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa stated that growth in car sales is one indicator showing that domestic market demand remains healthy. He revealed that car sales grew by 32.9 percent year-on-year (yoy) in June 2026, while motorcycle sales grew by 1.1 percent yoy. “Consumption and mobility indicators such as motor vehicle sales continue to grow and reflect sustained purchasing power,” Purbaya said while attending the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026 on Tuesday (4/8/2026). In addition to the growth in motor vehicle sales, he noted that domestic cement sales in June 2026 were also recorded as growing by 13.5 percent yoy. Furthermore, electricity consumption increased by 10.8 percent yoy, with growth in the household sector at 12.3 percent, the business sector at 10.0 percent, and the industrial sector at 6.5 percent. Meanwhile, the retail consumption index continued to rise, reaching 123.3, indicating that the community’s economic activity remains sustained. According to Purbaya, these various indicators provide confidence that the foundation of the Indonesian economy remains strong. The government, Purbaya said, will continue to maintain the growth momentum through responsive fiscal policies so that domestic demand remains the main support for national economic growth. “I monitor the economy and conditions on a monthly basis very carefully and am always ready to provide policy if there is an event that shows a weakening in the economy,” Purbaya revealed.
