Government Preparing Special Strategy to Strengthen Rupiah, Says Dasco
Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, has stated that the government is preparing a special strategy to strengthen the rupiah’s exchange rate against the United States (US) dollar. “I have also received information from the government that this week and going forward there will be special strategies carried out by the government, which I have heard and I believe will cause the exchange rate or the rupiah to strengthen,” Dasco told reporters at the Senayan Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Thursday, 11 June 2026. However, he did not explain in detail the strategy being prepared by the government to strengthen the rupiah against the US dollar. Dasco also said public trust in the government is growing stronger. This, he noted, influences the rupiah exchange rate. “I think trust in the government is also growing stronger, so that also affects the market and the strengthening of the rupiah exchange rate. So, I think the government’s work will continue to be carried out,” he said. He also received information that the rupiah’s exchange rate against the US dollar would strengthen further next week. Dasco urged members of the public holding dollars not to hesitate to exchange them back for rupiah. “Perhaps for those of you who are currently holding dollars hoping for an excess gain, you had better release your dollars. Because if the rupiah strengthens next week, it would be a pity to keep holding onto dollars. That is my appeal,” he concluded. It was previously reported that the Minister of Finance, Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, admitted he was optimistic that pressure on the rupiah exchange rate would soon ease and it would strengthen gradually entering the second half of 2026. He said the rupiah was indeed still facing pressure in early June 2026, mainly influenced by global sentiment, risk-off conditions in financial markets, as well as pressure on the current account and domestic financial transactions. However, Purbaya believes that stronger synergy between fiscal, monetary, and financial sector authorities will be able to control this pressure. He also believes that the latest policy regarding the governance of Export Proceeds (DHE) and efforts to deepen financial markets will increase the supply of foreign exchange. This, therefore, can assist monetary authorities in stabilising the rupiah through intervention in the foreign exchange market.
