Government Prepares Waste-to-Energy Power Generation Facility at Bantargebang
JAKARTA – The government plans to construct a Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) facility at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Disposal Site in Bekasi, West Java. The project is part of the second wave of waste-to-energy power generation development across several cities in Indonesia.
Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan stated that Jakarta is one of the regions that will receive this project. “The second phase PSEL project in Jakarta will include Bantargebang,” said Zulkifli Hasan at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs in Jakarta on Thursday, 12 March 2026.
The government aims for the waste processing facility to reduce the mounting accumulation of refuse increasing annually. According to Zulkifli, Jakarta’s waste volume reaches approximately 7,800 to 8,000 tonnes per day. This high volume has resulted in waste accumulation at Bantargebang reaching approximately 70 metres, equivalent to a 16-storey building.
The government targets the Bantargebang PSEL facility to process approximately 3,000 tonnes of waste daily. Approximately 2,000 tonnes derive from new waste entering daily. Meanwhile, around 1,000 tonnes come from existing waste that has accumulated at the location.
Another PSEL facility is planned for construction at the Tanjungan Integrated Waste Processing Area, which spans approximately 8 hectares. This facility is designed with a processing capacity of approximately 2,000 tonnes of waste daily.
An additional PSEL facility is also planned for the Integrated Waste Processing Area around Sunter, North Jakarta. This location is situated near the Jakarta International Stadium. “That one could also handle above 1,000, or even 2,000 tonnes daily,” said Zulkifli.
