The government is currently preparing a platform for carbon trading, the Carbon Unit Registration System (SRUK). Through this system, business actors will be able to trade carbon units in both domestic and international markets.

Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eniya Listiani Dewi, explained that SRUK differs from the mechanism for achieving national emission reduction targets, or Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The platform is intended for trading carbon units generated by business entities.

“SRUK is a platform for selling carbon from our country to the domestic market or the international market. Two markets. The domestic sector or international. It is not for NDC. NDC is mandatory. If biodiesel is claimed for NDC, it is for our country. But SRUK is for a business entity to sell on the platform,” Eniya said at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Tuesday (7/7/2026).

According to her, Indonesia will have a carbon trading platform for the first time, accessible to business actors from both within and outside the country. The carbon units traded can be purchased by domestic companies or international buyers.

Companies that successfully reduce emissions have the opportunity to obtain tradable carbon units. However, before being marketed through SRUK, they must first obtain approval from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

“Then we send it to SRUK as the platform. The platform is created by the OJK. That is the platform. Everyone will access it there. The energy sector will certainly have many of these,” she said.

She assessed that the presence of SRUK is part of accelerating the implementation of Presidential Regulation No. 110 of 2025 on Carbon Economic Value. Her ministry is currently drafting derivative regulations, including a draft Ministerial Regulation governing the business process for implementing carbon economic value in the energy sector.
