Government prepares initial phase of 100 GW solar power programme at 17 GW capacity
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is preparing the initial phase of developing solar power plants (PLTS) with a capacity of 17 gigawatts (GW) as part of the large 100 GW solar power programme being promoted to support the national energy transition.
In the “Hipmi Power Development Forum 2026” in Jakarta on Wednesday, Jisman P Hutajulu, Senior Expert to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in Strategic Planning, said the initial phase could serve as an entry point for domestic business players, including the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI), to participate in large-scale clean energy projects.
According to the Senior Expert to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the development of large-scale solar PV not only contributes to the energy mix but also opens investment opportunities and job creation.
“For the first phase, 17 GW has already been stated. If (this opportunity) is not seized, it would be a pity,” said Jisman.
In his presentation, Jisman said the government targets total solar PV development at around 100.7 gigawatt peak (GWp) combined with energy storage systems or battery energy storage system (BESS) of 145.8 gigawatt hours (GWh).
The programme is divided into two main schemas: large-scale solar PV connected to the national electricity grid, and distributed small-scale solar PV to reach remote areas and villages.
For large-scale solar PV, the capacity prepared is around 87.5 GWp with BESS support of 111 GWh. Meanwhile, distributed solar PV is targeted at 13.2 GWp with BESS around 34.8 GWh.
Additionally, the 100 GW solar power project is estimated to require an investment of about USD 71.3 billion, or around IDR 1,140 trillion.
President Prabowo Subianto himself targets solar PV development to reach 100 GW within 2026–2028. This target is highly ambitious, considering that the current installed solar PV capacity is only around 1.5 GW.
