Government Prepares Carbon Registry for Carbon Trading Launch
The Special Envoy to the President for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, announced that the government will launch the Carbon Unit Registration System (SRUK) on 9 July 2026. The launch of this national carbon unit recording platform is estimated to unlock carbon trading potential of around Rp 5 trillion.
“This is an extraordinary achievement as it has been awaited by the international community since COP21 in Paris in 2015,” Hashim stated during a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Office, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, 2 July 2026.
According to Hashim, SRUK will serve as Indonesia’s single platform for recording carbon units, adhering to international standards. He noted that the system has received positive responses from various parties, including representatives from friendly nations, the World Bank, and the European Union.
On the same occasion, the Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, stated that the government will grant ministerial approval for carbon credit nursery to four projects, consisting of three Forest Area Utilisation Business Licence (PBPH) holders and one social forestry project.
From these four projects, the government estimates a potential carbon credit creation of 31.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). This potential is expected to generate transaction values of approximately Rp 5 trillion and non-tax state revenue (PNBP) of around Rp 500 billion. Raja Juli remarked that carbon trading is one of the government’s strategies to create new sources of economic growth through the concept of green growth.
The Coordinating Minister for Food, Zulkifli Hasan, confirmed that the development of SRUK has been completed according to schedule. The preparation of the system involved several ministries and agencies, namely the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and the Financial Services Authority (OJK).
Nevertheless, Zulkifran Hasan noted that several ministerial regulations are still in the final stages of completion. He added that these regulations will be finalised in parallel without hindering the implementation of SRUK, which is scheduled to commence following its launch on 9 July 2026.
