Government Prepares Carbon Registry for Carbon Trading Launch

President’s Special Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, announced that the government will launch the National Carbon Registry System (SRUK) on 9 July 2026. The launch of the national carbon unit recording platform is estimated to open up carbon trading transaction potential of around Rp 5 trillion. “This is an extraordinary achievement because it has been awaited by the international community since COP21 in Paris in 2015,” Hashim said during a press conference in Central Jakarta on Thursday, 2 July 2026. According to Hashim, the SRUK will be a single platform for recording Indonesian carbon units that refers to international standards. He stated that the system has received a positive response from various parties, including representatives of friendly nations, the World Bank, and the European Union. On the same occasion, Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni said the government would submit ministerial approval for carbon credit seeding to four projects, consisting of three holders of Forest Utilisation Business Permits and one social forestry project. From these four projects, the government estimates a potential carbon credit of 31.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. This potential is estimated to generate a transaction value of around Rp 5 trillion and non-tax state revenue of approximately Rp 500 billion. Raja Juli stated that carbon trading is one of the government’s strategies to create new sources of economic growth through the green growth concept. Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan confirmed that the development of the SRUK has been completed on target. The system’s development involved several ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Forestry, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and the Financial Services Authority. However, Zulkifli noted that several ministerial regulations are still in the finalisation stage. He said these regulations would be completed in parallel without hindering the implementation of the SRUK, which is scheduled to commence after the launch on 9 July 2026.
