Government Prepared to Renovate 3,053 Artists' Homes
The Ministry of Housing and Residential Areas (PKP) is preparing 3,053 units of the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) for artists in various regions. This programme is part of a synergy between the Ministry of PKP and the Ministry of Culture to support the welfare of arts workers and the preservation of national culture.
The Minister of PKP, Maruarar Sirait, also known as Ara, stated that arts workers contribute significantly to maintaining Indonesian culture and therefore deserve state attention, including the provision of decent housing. “Arts workers are an important part of the nation’s cultural guardians. Therefore, we want the BSPS programme to also reach arts workers who need decent homes,” Ara said on Monday (18/05/2026).
The verification process is targeted for completion by 2 June 2026 so that the assistance can be distributed promptly. “We are preparing a BSPS quota for arts workers of 3,053 units. We have also received proposals for potential recipients from the Ministry of Culture and will follow up through field verification processes,” he added.
In addition to the housing assistance programme for artists, the meeting between the two ministries also discussed the revitalisation of traditional houses in various regions. Ara noted that traditional houses are a vital part of the nation’s cultural identity that must be preserved. According to him, traditional houses often feature communal or customary ownership characteristics, necessitating a special approach outside the current BSPS scheme.
“Many traditional houses have communal or customary ownership patterns, so they cannot use the current BSPS programme scheme. Therefore, a special handling pattern must be considered so that traditional houses are maintained and do not disappear,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, appreciated the Ministry of PKP’s attention to the cultural sector. He expressed hope that the revitalisation of traditional houses could be realised soon, as many such structures still require intervention. He added that his ministry would coordinate with several institutions, such as the BPK, BPKP, and KPK, to prepare appropriate regulations to ensure the revitalisation programme is well-executed and accountable.
The collaboration between the two ministries is expected to deliver development that is not only oriented towards infrastructure but also towards cultural preservation and the improvement of community welfare, including for arts workers and cultural communities throughout Indonesia.
