Government Predicts 143.9 Million Citizens to Travel for Eid 2026
The Indonesian government predicts that 143.9 million people will undertake mudik (homecoming) journeys during Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijrah, scheduled for 2026.
“Based on a survey conducted by the Ministry of Transportation, it is estimated that there will be 143.9 million journeys or citizens undertaking mudik for Eid,” said Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono during a press conference at the Presidential Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, 11 March.
According to destination data, Central Java and East Java will receive the highest number of travellers, followed by West Java, Yogyakarta, and South Sulawesi.
AHY stated that the peak mudik period would occur around 14-15 March, with a secondary peak on 18-19 March. The return journey peak is expected on 24-25 March, with a second surge on 28-29 March.
The government has announced a comprehensive discount scheme for the Eid 2026 mudik period covering air, sea, rail, and toll road transport.
For maritime transport, passengers will receive a 30 per cent discount on economy class fares for all Pelni PSO ferry routes. The discount runs for 26 days, from 11 March to 5 April 2026, targeting 445,534 passengers.
“Railway tickets will also receive a 30 per cent discount for all economy class trains. This runs for 16 days from 14 March to 29 March, targeting 1.2 million passengers,” AHY stated.
The government is offering a 17-18 per cent discount on airfares. The discount applies for approximately 16 days from 14 March to 29 March for tickets purchased from 10 February onwards.
The government is also providing 100 per cent discounts on port service charges for ferry services at 14 ASDP ferry terminals across the country.
For toll roads, the government is implementing a 30 per cent discount across 25 toll highway sections on 15-16 March and 26-27 March to help alleviate traffic congestion.
