Government Partners with Vantara to Prepare Mobile Hospitals for Wildlife
The Indonesian government is collaborating with global wildlife conservation organisation Vantara to strengthen wildlife health and care services. The collaboration includes enhancing the capacity of conservation personnel, providing mobile health facilities, and developing the Way Kambas Elephant Hospital.
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said wildlife conservation requires adequate facilities, expertise, and resources. According to him, the facilities built through this collaboration will be managed by the Indonesian government and relevant authorities.
“All facilities and programmes in this collaboration will be owned, operated, and managed by the Government of Indonesia and relevant authorities, so that they can serve Indonesia’s conservation priorities and wildlife for future generations,” said Raja Juli, as quoted from Vantara’s statement on Monday (24/8/2026).
Vantara is an animal welfare and conservation organisation founded by Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries Limited. The organisation manages rescue, rehabilitation, care, and long-term maintenance programmes for animals in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India.
In its collaboration with Indonesia, Vantara will provide veterinary expertise, technical support, infrastructure, and capacity building for officers. The programme also involves Indonesian conservation organisation Fauna Land.
A number of programmes have been prepared, including training for elephant mahouts, veterinarians, and officials involved in wildlife management. In addition, 10 Mobile Wildlife Hospitals, or Hospitals on Wheels, will be provided to address animal health needs in their natural habitats across several regions of Indonesia.
The Way Kambas Elephant Hospital will also be developed into an Elephant Treatment and Care Centre with additional equipment, devices, and technology to support animal handling.
The collaboration is a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Indonesia and Vantara. The agreement covers a number of areas, ranging from animal health and veterinary care, in situ and ex situ conservation, animal welfare, conservation breeding, rehabilitation, to rewilding.
The collaboration also includes capacity building and other areas agreed upon in accordance with Indonesia’s national conservation priorities.
Vantara’s Special Director of Compliance & Due Diligence, Ajit Kulkarni, said Indonesia has immense biodiversity, so conservation experience in Indonesia is also important knowledge for his organisation.
“Vantara has developed deep expertise in wildlife health, veterinary care, animal husbandry, and conservation, and we are pleased to share that experience with Indonesia. We also hope to learn from Indonesia’s vast conservation experience. Most importantly, we want this partnership to produce something real and sustainable for wildlife,” said Ajit.
The Government of Indonesia and Vantara will further develop areas of cooperation in accordance with national conservation priorities as well as applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
