Government Partners with Private Sector to Develop GBK as Jakarta's New Icon

The government is partnering with the private sector to develop the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) complex into a new icon for Jakarta. State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi explained that the development plan will focus on green open spaces and the modernisation of sports facilities. “Hopefully, it will become a new icon for Jakarta, attractive for tourists,” he stated at the Presidential Palace complex on Monday (20/7/2026). Prasetyo noted that the design concept is still being discussed while potential investors are being approached. He revealed that several parties have already shown interest, including foreign investors and domestic entities such as Danantara and the state-owned tourism holding company InJourney, which has led the sector on multiple occasions. The upgrade of infrastructure is deemed essential to meet the minimum requirements for hosting international events.
