Government outlines three steps to accelerate cooperative development

Cooperatives Minister Ferry Juliantono stated that the government is preparing three steps to accelerate cooperatives so that these institutions can become economic centres and improve public welfare. “First, rebuilding the image of cooperatives to make them more attractive to the younger generation through a modern, innovative face that is relevant to the times,” the Minister said during a gathering with religious leaders and cooperative activists at the Pamekasan Regency Hall, East Java, on Tuesday. Secondly, he added, the government is strengthening cooperative governance from an institutional perspective, as well as business development and enterprise, so they can compete and provide greater economic benefits to their members. Thirdly, the utilisation of digital spaces for various activities and businesses to be run by cooperative managers. “And moving quickly in the digital field is essential as part of service transformation and business development,” he said. The Minister also explained that as of 21 July 2026, 18,285 Merah Putih Village/Sub-district Cooperatives (KDKMP) units have been completed, with a target of 30,000 units by August 2026. “We have also prepared 30,000 KDKMP managers to ensure professional management,” he added. The Minister called for active participation from all parties to support this priority programme of President Prabowo Subianto, as its goal is to improve the economy and public welfare. All public economic services will be integrated into KDKMP, including the distribution of 3-kilogram LPG canisters, subsidised fertiliser, rice, cooking oil, non-cash food assistance (BPNT), and People’s Business Credit (KUR). “If cooperatives are strong, then villages are also strong. When the village economy grows, traders get a wider market, MSMEs develop, and public welfare will clearly increase,” the Minister said.
