Government Outlines Strategy to Prevent Java-Bali Power Outages
The government has affirmed its commitment to strengthening the reliability of the national electricity system to ensure disruptions like the recent power outage in the Java-Bali system do not happen again. These efforts involve bolstering the supply of primary energy, improving the readiness of power plants, and accelerating the transition towards new and renewable energy (EBT).
Head of the Government Communication Agency (Bakom), Muhammad Qodari, stated that the government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), has instructed state utility PT PLN (Persero) to ensure all primary energy needs are met in the required quantity and specifications. “The government, via the Ministry of ESDM, has instructed PT PLN to ensure the availability of primary energy according to the required amount and specifications, strengthen supply chain management, enhance system operational readiness, and accelerate the completion of maintenance at major power plants,” Qodari said during a press conference on Friday, 3 July 2026.
According to Qodari, these measures not only accelerate the recovery of the electricity system on Java Island following the disturbance but also strengthen coordination among stakeholders to maintain supply stability. As part of this enhanced coordination, the Directorate General of Electricity at the Ministry of ESDM convened all power generation business entities, including those from the PLN Group and Independent Power Producers (IPP), on 25 June 2026 to reinforce a shared commitment to maintaining operational performance, particularly in the Java-Bali system.
Looking ahead, the government will tighten supervision and risk mitigation across the entire primary energy supply chain, from power plant maintenance planning and energy reserve readiness to operational coordination among stakeholders. “The government will continue to strengthen supervision and risk mitigation across the entire primary energy supply chain, from maintenance planning to energy reserve readiness and stakeholder coordination, so that similar conditions can be prevented as early as possible and the public continues to receive stable and sustainable electricity services,” a statement read.
In addition to reinforcing the existing system, the government is also preparing for the development of power generation capacity through PT PLN’s Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for 2025–2034. During this period, an additional 69.5 gigawatts (GW) of new generation capacity is planned. Of this total capacity, 42.6 GW, or approximately 61 percent, will come from new and renewable energy sources.
