The Government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs, has determined that Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijriah will fall on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. This decision was announced during the ‘isbat’ session, following the integration of astronomical calculations (hisab) and direct lunar sightings (rukyatul hilal) at 88 monitoring points across Indonesia.

“It has been agreed that 1 Zulhijah 1447 Hijriah falls on Monday, 18 May 2026, and thus Idul Adha on 10 Zulhijah 1447 Hijriah falls on Wednesday, 27 May 2026,” stated the Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar. He explained that the determination was based on lunar monitoring conducted from Aceh to Papua to confirm astronomical results. The widespread monitoring was intended to ensure the accuracy of the sightings to serve as a basis for the decision in the isbat session.

The Islamic organisation Muhammadiyah had previously set the date for Eid al-Adha via the Single Global Hijri Calendar (KHGT) method. Using astronomical calculations, they established 10 Zulhijah to fall on the same day as the government’s announcement.

In astronomy, ‘ijtimak’ refers to the conjunction phase between the Sun and the Moon that marks the change of a month in the Hijri calendar. However, at sunset on the day of the conjunction, no region on Earth met the requirements of the Global Calendar Parameters (PKG) 1. These criteria include a minimum lunar altitude of five degrees and a minimum elongation of eight degrees before 24:00 UTC. After 24:00 UTC, no mainland area in the Americas met the required lunar altitude and elongation, and the conjunction occurred before dawn in New Zealand.

“Because these two parameters were not met, the start of Zulhijah could not begin on 17 May, but was instead set for Monday, 18 May 2026,” stated Muhammadiyah. Based on this determination, the Day of Arafah (9 Zulhijah 1447 H) falls on 26 May 2026, while Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on 27 May 2026. Similarly, the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) has also released its determination for the Eid al-Adha holiday.
