Government Monitors Election Bill Discussions, Prepares Strategic Issues
The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Bima Arya, stated that his office is continuously coordinating with Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) regarding the Election Bill. Bima emphasised that the government is monitoring various discourses emerging from political parties concerning future election mechanisms.
“There are certainly strategic issues for which we are preparing the substance. We are also following the discussions taking place among political party leaders. There are issues related to the presidential threshold and the parliamentary threshold,” Bima said at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (23/09/2026).
Bima noted that the emerging discourses are currently limited to informal discussions. The government is still awaiting the official discussion agenda from the DPR RI for this Election Bill.
“We are still waiting for the agenda to conduct official discussions, but we must certainly prepare all those strategic issues and determine the government’s position on them,” he said.
Bima remarked that elections must balance governmental effectiveness with democracy. He assessed that both the government and the coalition must operate effectively.
“It is important for us to anticipate wasted votes, but on the other hand, the government must also be effective. The coalition must also be effective. There must be a governance mechanism that establishes a system of checks and balances,” he added.
As previously reported, several proposed election models have emerged recently. One such proposal is the ‘national electoral district’ suggested by the Democratic Party.
Furthermore, there are proposals regarding the parliamentary threshold, suggesting a figure between 5 to 7 per cent. This figure emerged following a recent meeting of senior officials from the government coalition parties holding parliamentary seats.
