Jakarta - The Indonesian government has taken mitigation measures for Indonesian pilgrims undertaking the minor pilgrimage (umrah) in Saudi Arabia following the closure of airspace across several Middle Eastern countries due to heightened regional security tensions.

Muhammad Ilham Effendy, Technical Officer for Hajj Affairs at the Office of Hajj Affairs (KUH) in Jeddah, stated that the office has established three teams operating in three shifts stationed at three airport terminals to anticipate potential flight delays or cancellations.

β€œThe Office of Hajj Affairs has established three teams operating in three shifts and stationed at three airport terminals: Terminal 1, Terminal 2 (formerly Saudia), and the Hajj Terminal. This measure ensures optimal support and coordination for pilgrims affected by flight schedule changes,” said Ilham in a statement received in Jakarta on Sunday.

Several countries neighbouring Saudi Arabia, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, and Syria, have closed their airspace for both incoming and outgoing flights.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia alongside Oman, Jordan, and Lebanon continue to operate flights on a limited basis with heightened alert status, adjusting to developments in the security situation.

In anticipation of potential flight delays or cancellations that could leave pilgrims stranded at the airport, the Office of Hajj Affairs in Jeddah has moved swiftly to implement mitigation measures.

The Office of Hajj Affairs in Jeddah has also established intensive communication with airlines, travel operators, and travel partners (syarikah) in Saudi Arabia to find solutions for pilgrims whose return has been delayed due to flight cancellations or schedule adjustments.

The Indonesian Embassy in Riyadh has urged all Indonesian citizens in Saudi Arabia to remain calm and not panic amid the regional security developments. Citizens have also been asked to monitor official updates from local authorities and Indonesian diplomatic representatives.

The Indonesian government, through its representatives in Saudi Arabia, continues to monitor the situation and coordinate with relevant authorities to ensure the safety, security, and comfort of Indonesian pilgrims remain protected.
