Government may tax water transportation

PALANGKARAYA, Central Kalimantan: The Central Kalimantan provincial government is studying the possibility of imposing a tax on water transportation, a senior administration official said on Saturday.

It was hoped that the tax would increase the revenues of the provincial government, and regental and municipal governments in Central Kalimantan, said Governor Teras Narang.

"If the proposal is approved, 60 percent of the revenue will go to the provincial government and 40 percent to the regental and municipal governments," said the governor while handing over the draft tax regulation to a senior councillor during a council plenary meeting in Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan's capital.

The province has a huge number of water transportation vessels as it is traversed by many large rivers, including the Kapuas and Kahayan, which are used for the movement of people and goods. -- Antara
