JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Indonesian Ministry of Law has affirmed that the government prioritises protecting creators and mandates artificial intelligence (AI) companies to be honest and transparent when using human-created data.

“AI systems consume human creations. We have stated that the industrial-scale use of human works without compensation constitutes exploitation that is neither legally nor ethically acceptable,” said DJKI Director General Hermansyah Siregar during a public hearing with House Commission XIII at the Senayan Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (26 May 2026).

“This protection is not optional; it is a constitutional mandate. AI companies must be honest and transparent when using data, as it is human-created work,” he stressed.

Hermasnyah stated the government is not anti-technology. He said AI holds significant strategic potential for the nation’s future, provided it operates within clear legal boundaries.

“The government does not take an anti-technology stance. AI is a historical inevitability with strategic potential for Indonesia. However, innovation without guidelines leads to distortion, not true progress,” he added.

One such measure is harmonising regulations between the Copyright Bill and the Draft Presidential Regulation on AI Governance, initiated by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs.

Hermansyah warned that cutting-edge technologies like AI must be positioned as tools that adhere to human values, rather than eroding creators’ rights.

“Ultimately, human creators remain the originators, and we view AI as a supporting tool that must not undermine human-created works,” he added.
