Jakarta — Two Dutch intelligence agencies have issued a warning about hackers with alleged Russian backing who are capable of intercepting WhatsApp and Signal accounts. The hackers have gained access to accounts used by government officials, military personnel, and journalists.

The hacking campaign begins with messages disclosing security verification and personal identification codes. Once these are obtained, the attackers gain access to both private accounts and group chats.

“It is likely that Russian hackers have obtained access to sensitive information,” stated the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) and the Dutch Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD).

Both agencies noted that end-to-end encrypted messaging applications are popular among government officials for sharing confidential information. However, these platforms have unfortunately become ideal targets for obtaining sensitive data.

According to the agencies’ statement, hackers frequently impersonate Signal Support chatbots to persuade targets into revealing codes and ultimately taking over their accounts. Another method involves exploiting Signal’s linked devices feature. The agencies explained that contacts appearing twice or phone numbers registered as deleted accounts may indicate account compromise.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp has formally cautioned users against sharing six-digit security codes with anyone. The Meta subsidiary also stated it continues to develop protection measures against online threats.

Signal explained that the targeted attacks are conducted through sophisticated phishing campaigns designed to deceive users into sharing sensitive information. The company maintained that both its encryption and infrastructure remain entirely unaffected.
