Government Implements RANA Movement Starting from Islamic Boarding Schools
The government, through the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, has begun implementing the National Movement for Safe and Comfortable Spaces for Children (RANA) in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren).
“Today we are starting in educational units, specifically those under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, namely in pesantren and madrasas,” said Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Pratikno during the inauguration of the RANA National Movement at Al-Hamidiyah Islamic Boarding School in Depok on Sunday.
Pratikno stated that the movement is the result of cross-ministerial synergy as well as collaboration with religious organisations such as the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU), the Muhammadiyah Central Board (PP Muhammadiyah), and the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI).
He explained that the government is urging all parties to ensure the creation of safe and comfortable spaces for children, not only in educational units but also within the family environment, public spaces, and digital spaces. According to him, the movement does not stop at socialisation activities but must be realised through concrete actions.
“Children must be protected from violence, whether physical violence, verbal violence, sexual violence, or violence in digital spaces,” he said. He expressed hope that the practice can be implemented in all educational units across Indonesia.
“Let us together create safe and comfortable spaces for children, whether in the family space, educational unit space, public space, or digital space,” he said.
Meanwhile, Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar stated that thousands of Islamic boarding schools and tens of thousands of madrasas throughout Indonesia are ready to support the implementation of the movement. According to him, the launch of the movement is a momentum to strengthen the collective commitment to eliminating violence against children in various environments.
“Hopefully in the days to come there will be no more stories of violence in school spaces, in classrooms, in public spaces, in family spaces, or in any space at all,” said Nasaruddin.
On the same occasion, Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Arifah Fauzi said the movement is an implementation of various government policies, including the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) and Presidential Regulation Number 87 concerning the Roadmap for Child Protection in the Online Domain. She expressed hope that the national movement will not merely be a ceremonial programme but will build awareness among all elements of society to create a safe and comfortable environment for children.
“We hope this is not just a programme, but builds awareness for all of us throughout Indonesia so that our children truly feel comfortable and safe,” said Arifah.
