Government Focuses on Developing Thematic Fish Farming Programmes in Six Provinces
The Coordinating Ministry for Food is finalising plans to accelerate the development of Thematic Inland Fish Farming in various regions. In the initial implementation phase in 2026, the government will focus the development of this programme on six provinces.
The government is targeting the construction of 2,073 pilot locations at the start of the programme’s rollout. The six primary focus areas include East Java, Central Java, the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), Banten, West Java, and Lampung.
This massive step continues the success of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP). The KKP previously recorded the successful construction of 100 units of thematic biofloc aquaculture ponds across four provinces on Java island.
Coordinating Minister for Food, Zulkifli Hasan, stated that this programme will continue to be expanded gradually until it reaches tens of thousands of sites.
“A total of 40,000 thematic aquaculture locations will also be built,” Zulkifli said in a written statement on Wednesday (16/09/2026).
The man affectionately known as Zulhas emphasised the importance of the readiness of supporting infrastructure in every region. The success of this fish enlargement programme depends heavily on the smoothness of the supply chain to ensure that harvests are absorbed optimally.
“We must not only build ponds. We must ensure everything from upstream to downstream is secured, including seeds, feed, financing, technology, and the market,” he asserted.
The development of this aquaculture industry is expected to expand the national production base. In addition to ensuring the population’s protein independence, this initiative is designed to unlock new sources of economic growth in line with the diverse potential of each region. The national food security programme is set to become increasingly robust through nutritional self-sufficiency at the regional level.
