JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Social media was recently abuzz with rumours of a 10 per cent increase in the price of non-subsidised fuel (BBM) on 1 April 2026 at 00:00. This issue led to widespread panic buying of fuel among the public. Queues formed at petrol stations everywhere, with some people even bringing jerry cans to stockpile more petrol. The prediction of a fuel price hike was not without reason. This is because global oil prices are rising due to the war in the Middle East. Moreover, other countries are also experiencing fuel price increases, forcing them to declare national energy emergencies. The State Palace has emphasised that Pertamina will not yet adjust the prices of subsidised or non-subsidised fuel (BBM). This was confirmed by the Minister for State Secretariat (Mensesneg) Prasetyo Hadi following coordination between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Pertamina, based on instructions from President Prabowo Subianto. “That is why Pertamina has stated that it will not yet make price adjustments for either subsidised BBM or non-subsidised BBM,” Prasetyo said in his statement on Tuesday (31/3/2026). Prasetyo hopes this affirmation will provide clearer and more accurate information to the public. “We hope that with this statement, the public can obtain clearer and more accurate information, and we hope the public does not need to panic or worry because we guarantee the availability of BBM. We guarantee it,” Prasetyo said. Deputy Speaker of the DPR Sufmi Dasco Ahmad has asked the public not to hoard fuel (BBM). This is because the government has assured that the prices of subsidised and non-subsidised BBM will not rise on 1 April 2026.
