Government Evaluates PT KAI Following Fatal Accident in East Bekasi

The Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM and CEO of Danantara, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, announced plans for a total evaluation of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) on Tuesday (28/4/2026). This step follows the train accident incident in the East Bekasi area that resulted in the deaths of dozens of people.

As reported by Berita Satu, the government emphasised that improvements include a review of the national railway safety and operational systems. Rosan stressed that security aspects cannot be compromised in public transportation management to prevent similar tragedies from recurring.

“We will conduct a thorough re-evaluation starting with safety, then the existing railway system. This makes us always evaluate comprehensively,” said Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, Minister of Investment and Downstreaming, in Jakarta.

The main priority in this new policy is to place safety factors above passenger service comfort. The comprehensive assessment is being conducted to identify systemic weaknesses that triggered the fatal incident at the East Bekasi crossing.

The Head of the State-Owned Enterprises Management Agency, Dony Oskaria, added that the audit will not only cover technical safety aspects but also extend to the company’s management side. A special team will examine the root causes, the impact of the incident, and the effectiveness of the management’s response during the crisis.

The State-Owned Enterprises Management Agency is also committed to implementing President Prabowo Subianto’s instructions regarding the standardisation of railway crossings throughout Indonesia. There are approximately 1,800 crossing points listed as priorities for improvement in the government’s agreed work programme.

Dony explained that the current evaluation process is underway, involving relevant parties to dissect every challenge in the field. The government’s short-term focus is to ensure that thousands of these level crossings are repaired soon to reduce the risk of accidents in the future.
