Indonesian Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, Mukhtarudin, estimates that the number of Indonesian migrant workers in Iran is only in the hundreds. He said that not many Indonesian citizens work there. They are mostly domestic workers, and those who are there went voluntarily rather than being placed by the government. He stressed that Iran is not a placement country for PMI due to its risk of conflict. ‘So PMI is not our placement,’ he said.

To date, there have been no reports from migrant workers in Iran to KP2MI or to the Indonesian embassy in Tehran. Migrant workers in Iran are said to have not been affected by the war with the United States and Israel. ‘There is no problem. They are still under the control of the Iranian government, and also under our representatives,’ he added.

Nevertheless, Mukhtarudin said the government will continue to monitor developments in Iran and other areas affected by the conflict and prepare emergency measures as tensions escalate.

The Middle East conflict has escalated since the United States attacked Iran on Saturday, 26 February 2026. Iran retaliated by launching attacks on several US military bases in Gulf region, including Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. This war broke out after the US and Iran failed to reach a nuclear deal in Geneva, Switzerland, on 26 February 2026.
