“The WFH arrangement must not disrupt public services, and we must ensure all civil servants work in accordance with the expected output,” he said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He explained that the WFH policy will be implemented selectively to ensure it does not interfere with public-facing services.

According to him, essential public service sectors, such as community health centers, hospitals, transportation departments, and public security and order agencies, must continue to operate normally and cannot fully adopt the approach.

Sugiarto affirmed that the Ministry of Home Affairs will prepare technical guidelines through a circular to regulate the implementation of WFH in the regions, emphasizing that the policy should not be misinterpreted as a relaxation of standards that could lead to a drop in productivity.

“We hope that WFH does not encourage civil servants to leave their homes. This is not meant to be treated like a national holiday,” he remarked.

He further stated that the government will oversee the rollout to ensure duties are met, adding that regulations will be enforced against those who fail to comply.

The deputy minister stressed that his ministry will prepare technical rules to ensure the policy runs in accordance with its intended goal, namely, saving energy.

According to him, the WFH policy is expected to take effect shortly after the government issues an official decision, established through inter-ministerial coordination.

The policy is designed as part of an energy efficiency drive amid global dynamics, including reducing fuel consumption without compromising the performance of the state officials.

The government also emphasized that the implementation of WFH will be tailored to the specific duties of each institution to ensure that public services remain optimal.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto explained that the WFH scheme is planned to take effect one day a week for government workers, which includes civil servants and contract-based government employees.

As for the private sector, he noted that the implementation of this policy will be advisory in nature.
