Government Ensures Control of Broiler Chicken Stock and Prices
Jakarta — The government is ensuring the control of broiler chicken stock and prices remains stable ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah through the strengthening of supply, monitoring of distribution, and cross-sector coordination to maintain national food stability.
Interior Minister Tito Karnavian highlighted the presence of intermediaries in the broiler chicken supply chain that have the potential to trigger price fluctuations, and therefore requested regional mapping and identification of the causes.
“Regarding broiler chicken, the National Food Agency (Bapanas) must determine in which regions price increases for broiler chicken are occurring and what the causes are,” said the Interior Minister during a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.
According to Tito, price increases are not occurring at the farmer level but are emerging during the distribution stage by intermediaries who purchase from farmers and then resell to the market at higher prices.
Nevertheless, the Interior Minister also appreciated the improving trend that was beginning to become visible.
The number of regions experiencing increases in the Price Development Index (IPH) for broiler chicken was beginning to decline.
Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) showed broiler chicken prices were beginning to correct. By the first week of March, the number of regions with increasing IPH was recorded as declining to 176 municipalities/cities.
This figure was lower compared to the third and fourth weeks of February, which still reached 198 and 209 municipalities/cities respectively.
On the other hand, the number of regions experiencing a decline in the IPH for broiler chicken increased to 96 municipalities/cities.
This achievement improved compared to the two previous weeks, which each recorded 88 and 84 municipalities/cities respectively.
Separately, the Head of Bapanas and simultaneously Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman ensured that the government would eliminate middleman practices and would not tolerate the causes of price anomalies amid sufficient national production.
“Broiler chicken — I will resolve this. Indeed, there is only a slight increase, but there is no tolerance. Those raising prices turn out to be middlemen. That is wrong. Producers have not raised prices. This must be acted upon because reference prices already exist; no one is permitted to violate them,” stated Amran firmly.
From the supply side, the availability of national broiler chicken is ensured to be in a safe condition.
Based on the Food Balance Projection as of 5 March, by the end of March stock is estimated to still be in surplus at 591.3 thousand tonnes.
This figure comes from the initial March stock of 478.5 thousand tonnes, which is added to production of 475.7 thousand tonnes.
Meanwhile, consumption needs during March are estimated to reach 362.9 thousand tonnes.
The government has moved quickly to respond to broiler chicken price dynamics, which have been recorded as a contributor to inflation that is quite significant, both to general inflation and to volatile food inflation on a monthly basis in February 2026.
Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilisation at Bapanas I Gusti Ketut Astawa added that his agency received direction from the Head of Bapanas for all food business actors to comply with price regulations, from upstream to downstream in the supply chain.
“In essence, there should be no misconduct at the source. Then there should be no misconduct in the middle,” said Ketut.
Despite this, Ketut hopes that all regional heads throughout Indonesia can monitor and assign heads of relevant agencies to go to the field to maintain the stability of this strategic commodity.
The government is conducting market intervention through the Cheap Food Movement (GPM) programme. The public can obtain premium quality frozen broiler chicken in accordance with the reference sales price (HAP) of Rp40,000 per kilogram.
The GPM programme for frozen broiler chicken is currently available at more than 1,200 outlets spread across 17 provinces and will run until the day before Eid al-Fitr.
The GPM is a collaboration between Bapanas, PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia Tbk, PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia, and PT Malindo Feedmill Tbk. The public can find out the location of frozen broiler chicken GPM outlets through the link at bit.ly/gpmdagingayam2026.
