Government Deports American Fugitive Hiding in Sawangan Bunker

The Directorate General of Immigration, under the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Services, has carried out the deportation of an American citizen, identified by the initials AW, who was involved in sexual abuse cases in his home country.

Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko stated that the deportation took place following a thorough investigation. “After undergoing examinations at the Directorate General of Immigration and following coordination with the United States Embassy, the individual has been issued a deportation and prohibition order,” Hendarsam told reporters on Sunday, 7 June 2026.

Following the investigation, a team from the Directorate General of Immigration proceeded to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to supervise the deportation process. Upon arrival at the airport, the team and representatives from the United States Embassy, alongside US Marshals, proceeded to the check-in counter and waited in the Immigration Lounge until the scheduled departure. The deportation was executed via Singapore Airlines flight SQ959, with the individual accompanied by three US Marshals during the journey to the United States.

It was revealed that Indonesia had become a refuge for the American fugitive. The Directorate General of Immigration apprehended AW in a bunker within his residence in the Sawangan area of Depok on 23 April 2026. AW had reportedly entered Indonesia in 2011 to evade prosecution for sexual abuse crimes committed in the United States.

The arrest was made after the Directorate General of Immigration received a request for assistance from the United States Embassy, followed by a series of investigations and intelligence operations. The case came to light after a woman, identified as NM, reported to the Directorate General of Immigration that she and her two children had suffered restricted freedom and were victims of sexual abuse by the perpetrator, AW.
