Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK) Pratikno has conveyed the proposal for students to learn from home starting in April. He stated that energy efficiency policies must consider experiences from the COVID-19 pandemic period.

“Efficiency measures must be formulated in a measured manner and based on data on energy consumption and mobility levels in each sector, so as not to cause excessive negative impacts on society,” said Menko Pratikno, quoted by detikEdu from Antara on Monday (23/3/2026).

Pratikno assured that this energy efficiency policy will not disrupt the learning process or public services. Regarding learning, distance learning models (PJJ) will be adjusted to the characteristics of the subjects.

In the future, if it involves practical lessons, the government will direct that learning to be conducted face-to-face. In addition to the proposal for learning from home, the government is also considering adjustments to the distribution of the free nutritious meal programme (MBG) and funding for student internet access.

Besides education, it was also agreed that cross-agency strategies for energy savings are needed. For example, with flexible work schemes for civil servants (ASN), strengthening the use of digital platforms, and limiting mobility for official travel.

This savings policy is proposed to take effect starting in April 2026.

“Cross-ministerial and agency coordination is key to ensuring that energy efficiency policies can run effectively, while also guaranteeing that public services continue to operate optimally,” said Pratikno.

However, the government’s proposal for learning from home has not yet been decided.

Southeast Asian Countries United in Energy Saving

Not only Indonesia, this energy saving is also being implemented by Indonesia’s neighbouring countries. According to Al Jazeera, government offices in the Philippines have already implemented a four-day work week, while officials in Thailand and Vietnam are also encouraged to work from home and limit travel.

The Myanmar government has also imposed alternating driving days. Furthermore, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnivirakul announced temporary price caps on diesel, and Vietnam has begun using its fuel price stabilisation fund.

This energy efficiency is a response to oil restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. It is known that in recent weeks, the area was closed by Iran following attacks carried out by the United States (US) and Israel on 28 February 2026.
