Government Confirms KRL Fares Will Not Rise, Passengers May Enjoy Cheaper Costs Through Integration

The government has confirmed that Commuter Line (KRL) electric train fares will not increase. Amid discussions on transport integration in Jakarta, the Ministry of Transportation has stressed there are no plans to raise KRL fares, which continue to receive government subsidies.

Instead, the government is preparing a fare integration scheme that will allow the public to pay cheaper public transport costs when switching from one mode to another. Secretary of the Directorate General of Transport Integration and Multimodality at the Ministry of Transportation, Dedy Cahyadi, said KRL fares are maintained because they still receive subsidy support from the government through the Directorate General of Railways.

He emphasised that the ongoing discussions are not about fare increases, but rather how to integrate the payment system and KRL fares with other transport modes in Jakarta. “The subsidy for the KRL is borne by the Ministry of Transportation through the Directorate General of Railways. The point is that there is no fare increase. In fact, the fare will be even cheaper if integrated,” Dedy said.

The Ministry of Transportation is currently bridging discussions between PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to discuss public transport fare integration. If an agreement is reached, KRL users will be able to enjoy an integrated fare scheme with other transport modes operating in Jakarta. The move is expected to increase public interest in using public transport as journeys become more practical and economical.

According to Dedy, the integration process still requires an agreement between all involved parties before it can be fully implemented. As an illustration, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government currently applies an integration fare of Rp10,000 for public transport journeys within the capital. The scheme is valid for three hours on working days and covers all transport modes managed by DKI Jakarta’s regional-owned enterprises.
