Government Communication Body Denies Conditioning Public Support for Free Nutritious Meals Demo
The Government Communication Body of the Republic of Indonesia (Bakom RI) has responded to widespread rumours alleging government conditioning behind demonstrations supporting the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme. Bakom RI firmly denied the claims.
Acting Deputy for Partnership and Media Relations at Bakom RI, Kurnia Ramadhana, stated that the government always provides space for public opinion. He emphasised that the government respects both supporters and critics.
“Under Indonesian laws and regulations, anyone may express an opinion. Whether that opinion agrees with government policy or criticises it, the government’s position is to respect both sides,” Kurnia told reporters at the Bakom RI building in Jakarta on Wednesday (24/6/2026).
Kurnia stressed that the government is currently undertaking improvements to the MBG programme. Reforms across all aspects are being continuously implemented by the leadership of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), Nanik S. Deyang and her team.
“Essentially, what the government is currently doing is striving to improve the Free Nutritious Meals programme. Meanwhile, improvements are also being carried out by the new BGN leadership,” he said.
Kurnia denied any conditioning or government involvement in the MBG demonstrations, citing the administration’s respect for both pro and contra opinions from the public.
“I think my earlier explanation should suffice in responding to the allegation of government conditioning of demonstrations supporting MBG. I believe that is not true,” he stated.
“Because the government’s position is to respect every voice of the people, whether in support or in opposition,” he added.
