Government Begins Mapping Business Sectors Vulnerable to Mass Layoffs
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, stated that the government has begun mapping several business sectors that are potentially facing a wave of layoffs. This announcement was made during the 3rd Congress of the Confederation of the Indonesian Labour Union (KPBI) held in Jakarta on Sunday, 7 June 2026.
“Consequently, we are looking into mitigation strategies for layoffs and the welfare of labourers, which we are all becoming aware of. Given the current situation and conditions, I have heard that meetings regarding layoff mitigation are scheduled to take place as early as next week,” said Dasco.
He explained that the Layoff Mitigation and Labour Welfare Task Force, which includes several heads of Indonesian labour unions as members, will provide critical input regarding which sectors are most vulnerable to mass layoffs. “This is based on information provided by labour union leaders to the government, identifying the specific points that are about to be impacted by layoffs,” he added.
Dasco expressed hope that the task force’s input would prove beneficial to the government. He specifically highlighted the Labour Desk established by the National Police (Polri), which has significantly assisted in reallocating laid-off workers to new employment opportunities in other companies. “We believe this is an excellent initiative and should be scaled up within the government’s layoff mitigation and labour welfare task force,” he noted.
During the same event, the Chief of the National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, acknowledged that current global conditions are impacting the domestic landscape, including industrial relations involving labour. “As the police, we must remain neutral and ensure that the investment climate continues to grow. Companies and industries must thrive to create jobs, which in turn creates opportunities for our fellow workers,” Sigit stated.
Sigit also mentioned that the Labour Desk has successfully facilitated new employment for 3,000 laid-off workers to date. Regarding these placement efforts, Sigit emphasised that the Labour Desk’s current mandate extends beyond industrial issues to actively helping labourers improve their overall welfare.
