Government Assures No Mass Layoffs for Honorary Teachers Amid Restructuring

The government has assured that there will be no mass layoffs of honorary teachers amid the restructuring of non-civil servant (non-ASN) staff. Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel at the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Nunuk Suryani, stated that the government is working to ensure that honorary teachers can continue teaching while a fair and transparent selection process is being prepared. “The Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform has conveyed that there will be no mass layoffs,” Nunuk said during a press statement in Jakarta on Wednesday. She explained that the government is designing a mechanism to meet teacher needs that favours non-ASN educators through a fair selection process. This step is expected to provide broader opportunities for honorary teachers to obtain status certainty and career paths in the future. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is ensuring the continuity of assignments for honorary teachers in accordance with applicable mechanisms while preparing the selection process to maintain the continuity of educational services for students across Indonesia. The government is currently calculating the national requirement for teacher formations. While waiting for this process, honorary teachers are asked to continue carrying out their teaching duties as usual. This policy is reinforced by Circular Letter Number 7 of 2026, which serves as the basis for local governments to extend the assignments of honorary teachers and guarantee the continuity of their salary payments. With 237,196 non-ASN teachers still actively teaching as of 2026, this government measure demonstrates a serious commitment to maintaining stability in the education sector.
