Government and Private Offices Advised to Implement WFH Tomorrow, Here's Why

The Ministry of State Secretariat has advised all government institutions, public bodies, and private companies to provide work flexibility and leeway for employees on 18 August 2026.

This is in connection with the celebration of the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence, as set out in circular letter Number: B-17/M/S/TU.00.03/08/2026, issued on 14 August 2026.

The circular contains an appeal to provide the widest possible opportunity for the public to celebrate, reflect upon, and give thanks for independence in their own ways, without reducing national productivity.

“To all leaders of government institutions, public bodies, and private companies, please provide work flexibility and leeway for all employees in your respective work environments on 18 August 2026,” states point (1), as quoted on Monday, 17 August 2026.

The provision of work flexibility and leeway should be adjusted to the conditions, workload, and operational needs applicable in each organisation.

In addition, the circular reminds that public services in several sectors must continue to operate optimally. This applies particularly to government institutions and public bodies or private companies that provide direct services to the public, including but not limited to health services, banking, telecommunications, energy, security, public order, transport, and other essential services.

Chief of Presidential Staff General TNI (Ret.) Dudung Abdurachman explained that the work-from-home arrangement is intended to enliven the independence anniversary.

“Yes, we are also here. Perhaps we are celebrating the independence anniversary, we are rejoicing,” he said at the Presidential Palace Complex on Monday, 17 August 2026.
