Government adviced to spur energy diversification

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government needs to spur energy diversification in an effort to anticipate various energy problems in the future, House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono said here on Monday.

He said energy problems should be anticipated, especially in relation with its retrenchment following the hikes in the world crude oil price.

The House speaker said the hikes in the world`s oil prices to US$90 per barrel recently were really alarming, and if they continued to rise until the end of December, it would influence the amended 2007 state budget because the oil subsidy would also increase.

"Actually the standard price of crude oil is US$60 per barrel," Agung said, adding that Indonesia at present was an importer of low quality crude oil and exporter of good quality crude.

But because of increasing fuel oil consumption at home, oil imports were also increasing.

"Such a condition will become a burden for the national economy as a whole and therefore the government should anticipate it," the House speaker said.

To anticipate the fluctuations in world oil prices, Agung said the government should immediately anticipate it by issuing various policies on non-renewable resources.

He said the government should take several strategic measures by increasing the capacity of national oil production, inviting both domestic and foreign investors to conduct oil exploration, and economize on fuel oil use. (*)
