Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, has stressed that the high energy consumption, particularly from fossil sources, is driving the government to intensify efforts in accelerating the development of the national electric vehicle ecosystem as a step towards a clean energy transition.

He mentioned that these efforts are being pursued through industry strengthening, provision of supporting infrastructure, and the granting of incentives to expand electric vehicle adoption in an integrated manner while bolstering energy independence.

In a press release from the Ministry of ESDM quoted in Jakarta on Friday, Minister Bahlil stated that the government’s current focus is on building an integrated electric vehicle ecosystem to ensure its implementation is more widespread and effective in practice.

“We are pushing for the faster utilisation of clean and renewable energy, including through electrification in the transportation sector,” Bahlil said after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto at the inauguration of the electric commercial vehicle assembly plant produced by PT VKTR Mobilitas Teknologi Tbk in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday (9/4/2026).

He added that the government is preparing various facilitations and incentives to accelerate the programme’s implementation in line with the set targets.

“The important thing is that the implementation can proceed in practice. We continue to encourage it so that the realisation aligns with the targets,” he said.

On the same occasion, President Prabowo emphasised that food and energy self-sufficiency are the main foundations for a nation that truly wants to be independent.

According to him, the transition to clean energy is a strategic step that cannot be delayed.

“One of the steps is to use electricity. Using electricity to no longer rely too heavily on fossil-based BBM and carbon,” Prabowo stated.

The President stressed that energy is one of the most strategic sectors for a country’s sustainability, alongside food.

Therefore, Indonesia must achieve self-sufficiency to remain strong and sovereign amid global dynamics.
