Government accelerates construction of 'Sekolah Rakyat' in Kulon Progo
The government is accelerating the construction of educational infrastructure as part of an effort to provide quality education for underprivileged communities, one of which is the Sekolah Rakyat (People’s School) in Kulon Progo Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). Social Affairs Minister (Mensos) Saifullah Yusuf stated on Monday that the acceleration of this development is the result of cross-sectoral collaboration. By 2026, a total of 104 permanent school buildings will have been constructed across various regions, complementing 166 pioneering schools spread from Sabang to Merauke.
To shape students’ character, the Sekolah Rakyat programme implements a three-month matriculation period as a companion to the School Environment Introduction Period (MPLS). This initiative is strengthened by the involvement of 2,000 cadets from the Military Academy and the Police Academy. Under this ‘Taruna Bhakti’ programme, each school will be assisted by five Military Academy cadets and five Police Academy cadets who will play a role in instilling discipline and good habits, such as time management, personal and environmental hygiene, and the organisation of personal belongings.
Saifullah emphasised that Sekolah Rakyat differs from general public schools as it does not implement an open registration system. He explained that the programme uses a data-based outreach scheme involving social facilitators, local social services, and community leaders. Prospective student data then undergoes a plenary mechanism to be determined by the regional head, whether a regent, mayor, or governor, depending on land provision. This ensures that access to education genuinely targets those in need through an accountable tracking system.
The government is targeting a significant expansion of student allocation each year. While last year the programme accommodated 15,000 students, this year’s target has been raised to more than 30,000 students. ‘Our target is that by the end of 2029, this school will be able to accommodate more than 800,000 students throughout Indonesia. With each district/city having a permanent building with a capacity of 2,000 students, we are optimistic we can create a more inclusive educational ecosystem,’ he said.
Kulon Progo Deputy Regent Ambar Purwoko welcomed and expressed gratitude for the certainty of the Sekolah Rakyat’s operation in Kulon Progo this academic year. A consolidation meeting bringing together prospective school principals, teachers, students, and parents provided clarity on the future of children’s education in Kulon Progo. Responding to the Minister’s directive regarding the fulfilment of facilities or support staff that may still be lacking, Ambar stated the local government’s full commitment to collaboration. He proposed that the school’s technical operations also empower local residents, as their involvement is crucial for understanding local conditions while providing a positive economic impact on the surrounding community from the start of operations.
