Google's Gemini Surpasses 950 Million Monthly Users, Closing in on ChatGPT

Google has stated that the number of monthly users of its Gemini artificial intelligence assistant service has surpassed 950 million.

According to a TechCrunch report on Thursday (23 July), Google said in its second-quarter 2026 performance report that Gemini’s user numbers have tripled compared to last year.

In February 2026, the company announced that the Gemini app had reached 750 million monthly active users.

Gemini’s user base is now approaching that of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which was reported to have reached one billion monthly active users in June 2026.

“We’re seeing users love the latest agentic AI features like Daily Brief and the personal agent Gemini Spark, which are now available in the United States and internationally,” said Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

“We’ve been launching useful new features like these at an incredible pace,” he said.

In addition to being popular among Android device users, Google said Gemini also has a strong user base on iOS.

According to Appfigures data, the app has been downloaded more than 137 million times on iPhone and iPad over the past 12 months.

In its latest State of AI report, analytics firm Sensor Tower noted that ChatGPT’s market share in the AI assistant segment fell below 50 per cent for the first time in the first half of 2026.

Over the same period, Gemini’s share rose to 27.7 per cent.

Google also said its search engine service continues to record growth amid rising use of AI apps as an alternative for finding information.

The company said that AI Mode, a question-and-answer feature integrated into Google Search, is now used by more than one billion users.

According to Google, the feature is driving an increase in the number of search queries while also lowering AI operational costs through the development of more efficient hardware, even as the company continues to add new models and features.
