Google's Gemini Surpasses 950 Million Monthly Users, Closing in on ChatGPT

Google has announced that the number of monthly users for its artificial intelligence assistant, Gemini, has surpassed 950 million. In its second-quarter 2026 performance report, the company stated that Gemini’s user numbers have tripled compared to the previous year. In February 2026, the company reported the Gemini app had reached 750 million monthly active users. The current figures bring Gemini close to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reportedly reached one billion monthly active users in June 2026. CEO of Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, said, ‘We are seeing users love features like Daily Brief and the personal agent Gemini Spark, which are now available in the United States and internationally.’ He added, ‘We have been rolling out helpful features like these at an incredible pace.’ Beyond its popularity on Android devices, Google noted that Gemini also has a strong user base on iOS. According to data from Appfigures, the app was downloaded more than 137 million times on iPhone and iPad over the past 12 months. In its latest State of AI report, analytics firm Sensor Tower recorded that ChatGPT’s market share in the AI assistant segment fell below 50 percent for the first time in the first half of 2026. Over the same period, Gemini’s share rose to 27.7 percent. Google also stated that its core search engine continues to grow despite the increasing use of AI applications as alternatives for information retrieval. The company reported that its AI Mode feature, a question-and-answer function integrated into Google Search, is now used by more than one billion users. According to Google, this feature has driven an increase in search queries while simultaneously reducing AI operational costs through the development of more efficient hardware, even as the company continues to add new models and features.
