Google has updated its artificial intelligence-based search feature, AI Mode, with several improvements that change the way users browse the internet. One of the most noticeable changes is the ability to open web pages side by side directly on one screen without needing to switch tabs. Previously, users had to open a new tab first to access web pages from AI Mode search results. Now, simply by clicking a link, the web page appears next to the AI display on the same screen. Google states that this approach allows users to stay focused on their tasks while still being able to explore various relevant web pages. After selecting a link, the product page will open directly beside the AI display. From there, users can immediately ask follow-up questions about ease of use, specifications, and price information without switching screens. AI Mode then works by utilising the context from the open page, plus information from various web sources, to provide relevant and accurate answers. In this way, users can explore sites, compare product details, and ask follow-up questions while maintaining the initial search context. In addition to the side-by-side display, Google has introduced a new way to search by utilising multiple tabs at once. In Google Chrome on both desktop and mobile versions, users can tap the plus menu available in the search box on the New Tab page or directly in AI Mode. From there, users can select tabs that are currently or recently open to include in the search. This feature allows users to combine various sources such as tabs, images, or files as additional context in AI-based searches. For example, when searching for hiking routes, users can combine several already open tabs and request recommendations for similar routes in other locations. Another example, when studying for an exam, users can input notes or materials that are open to request additional explanations from the AI. For now, the AI Mode update is only available to users in the United States. Google states that the feature will be expanded to more regions gradually in the future.
