Google Unveils Android 17 Features with Gemini AI at Core
Google has unveiled several new features for Android 17 at The Android Show: I/O Edition 2026. The announcement forms part of Google I/O 2026’s annual conference, which this year focuses on artificial intelligence (AI) development, digital productivity, and user security.
Through this update, Google is further integrating Gemini AI into the Android operating system. The move is seen as the company’s effort to deliver smarter, more personalised, and practical mobile experiences in daily life.
Four key features introduced are Gemini Intelligence, Noto 3D, Pause Point, and Screen Reactions. All will be rolled out progressively throughout 2026 on compatible Android devices.
One of the biggest updates in Android 17 is Gemini Intelligence, a new AI system enabling users to automate cross-app tasks.
With this feature, users can use voice commands or images to handle daily tasks. For example, taking a photo of a restaurant menu or travel brochure allows Gemini AI to help plan trips, shopping lists, and activity recommendations.
Google describes this capability as a more natural AI integration into everyday smartphone use.
Google states that Gemini Intelligence will initially be available on Google Pixel and Samsung devices before expanding to other Android models.
Beyond AI enhancements, Google has updated Android’s visual design with a new 3D emoji collection called Noto 3D.
The latest emojis feature three-dimensional effects, making them more realistic and expressive than standard emojis. Google says the update responds to growing global use of emojis in digital communication.
The company reports around 10 billion emojis are sent daily worldwide.
Noto 3D emojis will first appear on Google Pixel devices before expanding to other Google services.
Google has also introduced a new digital wellness feature called Pause Point, designed to help users reduce doomscrolling – the habit of endlessly scrolling through social media.
Unlike blocking apps outright, Pause Point uses a more persuasive approach. When users open certain apps too frequently, the system introduces a 10-second pause before allowing access.
During this brief interval, users see breathing exercises, usage duration reminders, or suggestions for more productive activities.
Google states the feature is designed to keep users in control without feeling forced to stop digital activities.
To support content creators, Android 17 introduces Screen Reactions, an AI-powered feature enabling instant reaction videos without additional apps. The system automatically records both the user’s face and screen, overlaying the reaction video onto the main content.
This technology simplifies reaction video creation, which previously required separate editing processes.
Screen Reactions will debut on the Google Pixel 10 alongside exclusive Instagram features on Android.
Google also announced updates to Instagram for Android, including Ultra HDR recording and playback, built-in video stabilisation, and Night Sight technology from the Instagram camera.
Additionally, Instagram Edits will receive extra AI support such as smart enhance for automatic visual quality improvement and sound separation for easier audio processing.
Through these updates, Google aims to position Android 17 as a smarter, more productive operating system that supports modern digital lifestyles.
