Google is preparing a special stage for its Android operating system once again, namely “The Android Show: I/O Edition” 2026. This event will be held online on Tuesday, 12 May 2026.

The Android Show: I/O Edition can be considered a warm-up before Google’s annual software developer conference, I/O, begins a week later, on 19 May.

At I/O, Google typically discusses AI, Gemini, Chrome, and various other broader technologies. Meanwhile, The Android Show, as the name suggests, is dedicated specifically to the Android operating system.

However, looking back, this newly launched event last year was used by Google to introduce Android 16, Wear OS 6, a new Android design, cross-device Gemini features, and a new security system to protect users from digital scams.

Therefore, this year’s event is expected to be filled with important announcements again. Especially since Android is currently one of the main homes for Google’s AI ambitions, from smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, TVs, cars, to other new devices in its ecosystem.

According to rumours circulating on the internet, The Android Show: I/O Edition is believed to be the stage for the debut of Android 17.

This latest operating system is said to be entering the final stage of development, with the stable version expected to launch in June.

In addition to the successor to Android 16, attention is also focused on a mysterious project called Aluminium OS.

This is a new operating system rumoured to combine Android and ChromeOS into a single integrated platform.

Aluminium OS is reportedly being prepared as a replacement for ChromeOS, while also paving the way to bring the Android experience to the PC ecosystem.

According to analysis from technology media Android Authority, Google deliberately chose “Aluminium” because the word starts with “AL”. It could emphasise that this OS is indeed designed for Android Laptop (AL).

Or it could also be symbolic and a play on words to indicate the AI (Artificial Intelligence) element that will be at its core.
