Google Tests Gmail Live, Allowing Users to Search and Summarise Inbox via Voice

Google is reportedly testing a new feature called Gmail Live, an artificial intelligence (AI) based service that allows users to search for information within their Gmail inbox using only voice commands. This feature will be available for both Android and iOS devices.

Gmail Live was first introduced during the Google I/O 202lar event in May. Now, according to a report from 9to5Google, the feature has begun appearing in beta versions, indicating that the launch of a stable version is likely approaching.

Unlike conventional email search features, Gmail Live operates much like Gemini Live, specifically optimised for Gmail. Users can simply ask questions using everyday language without the need to type keywords or manually browse through emails one by one.

For instance, a user could ask, “When is my next travel schedule?” or “What is the status of my last order?”. The AI will then search for relevant information within the inbox, compile a summary, and read it aloud while displaying it on the screen.

For users who prefer typing, Google also provides a similar experience through the ‘Ask Gmail’ feature in the search bar. With the assistance of AI, users can pose questions using natural language and receive summaries of information stored in their emails.

In the beta version, the Gmail Live icon appears next to the Gmail search bar, near the Gemini side panel button. When the icon is tapped, users enter a full-screen interface to begin interacting with the AI via voice.

Before the conversation begins, Gmail Live will display several example questions that can be asked. While the AI is processing a request, a blue light will appear around the edges of the screen as a system indicator.

Once the process is complete, the AI will provide answers in both text and voice formats. Users can also mute the microphone or exit Gmail Live using control buttons available at the bottom of the screen.

The introduction of Gmail Live is part of Google’s strategy to provide a more practical email experience through generative AI. The feature is expected to help users find important information amidst a high volume of emails without having to open every individual message.

Currently, Gmail Live is still in the testing phase and is scheduled to become available to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers during the summer of this year.

In addition to Gmail Live, Google has also confirmed it is developing ‘Docs Live’ to assist users in creating and editing documents via voice, as well as similar capabilities for Google Keep, ensuring that the Google productivity ecosystem becomes increasingly integrated with generative AI technology.
