Google Tests Gmail Live, Allowing Users to Search and Summarise Inbox via Voice

Google is reportedly testing a new feature called Gmail Live, an artificial intelligence (AI) based service that allows users to search for information in their Gmail inbox using only voice commands. The feature will be available for both Android and iOS devices. Gmail Live was first introduced at the Google I/O 2026 event in May. According to a report by 9to5Google, the feature has now appeared in a beta version, indicating that a stable launch may be imminent. Unlike conventional email search functions, Gmail Live operates similarly to Gemini Live but is optimised specifically for Gmail. Users can simply ask questions using everyday language without needing to type keywords or browse through emails individually. For example, a user can ask, ‘When is my next travel schedule?’ or ‘What is the status of my last order?’. The AI will then search for relevant information from the inbox, compile a summary, and read it aloud while simultaneously displaying it on the screen. For users who prefer typing, Google provides a similar experience through the Ask Gmail feature in the search bar. With AI assistance, users can pose questions in natural language and receive information summaries from stored emails. In the beta version, the Gmail Live icon appears next to the Gmail search bar, adjacent to the Gemini side panel button. Tapping the icon launches a full-screen interface for users to begin interacting with the AI via voice. Before a conversation starts, Gmail Live displays several example questions that can be asked. While the AI processes a request, a blue light appears around the edges of the screen as an indicator that the system is working. Once processing is complete, the AI provides an answer in both text and voice formats. Users can also mute the microphone or exit Gmail Live using control buttons at the bottom of the screen. The introduction of Gmail Live is part of Google’s strategy to deliver a more practical email experience through generative AI. The feature is expected to help users find important information amidst a high volume of emails without having to open each message individually. Gmail Live is currently in the testing phase and is scheduled to become available to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers this summer. In addition to Gmail Live, Google has also confirmed it is developing Docs Live to help users create and edit documents using voice, as well as similar capabilities in Google Keep, further integrating the productivity ecosystem with generative AI technology.
