Jakarta — Google is seeking to deepen its relationship with the US Department of Defence as Anthropic faces severe restrictions within the administration. The search giant is reported to be expanding the role of its Gemini AI model within military bureaucracy.

Google has announced that it will introduce features enabling military and civilian personnel to build custom AI agents for unclassified work through the GenAI.mil portal. These agents can assist with tasks such as meeting notes, creating action points, and breaking down large projects. Initially, the agents will operate on unclassified networks.

According to reports, the expansion of these agents is under discussion for use within classified and highly confidential environments, citing CNBC International on 11 March 2026.

Emil Michael, Chief Technology Officer of the US Department of Defence, expressed confidence that Google could be an excellent partner across all networks.

Previously, Anthropic was the sole AI provider operating within the Pentagon’s classified cloud infrastructure. The Department of Defence subsequently added other companies to the restricted network, including OpenAI and xAI, whilst expanding collaboration with Google.

Anthropic has refused to permit the US Department of Defence to use its technology for autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance. This decision provoked strong anger from President Donald Trump, who has characterised Anthropic as a dangerous “woke” left-wing company threatening American lives. Shortly thereafter, the government designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk, a classification typically reserved for foreign adversaries.

In response, the company has sued the Trump administration over this designation, arguing the action is unprecedented and unlawful, and claiming it has caused permanent harm to Anthropic.

Michael told Bloomberg that the dispute with Anthropic remains ongoing, and he emphasised that the resolution of the matter between the two parties will not be resolved through litigation.
