Google has officially introduced an AI-powered virtual wardrobe feature via Google Photos, which is now available on both iOS and Android. While this feature was announced earlier this year, it has only recently become widely available in the US, Brazil, and India.

According to TechCrunch, the feature has been available to Android users since June 2024, but its availability has now expanded to include iOS users. For millennials, the feature may feel reminiscent of the popular romantic comedy “Clueless” (1996), which featured a protagonist who used a digital system to organise her vast collection of clothing.

Regarding Google’s virtual wardrobe, the feature utilises AI technology to create a digital replica of a user’s wardrobe based on fashion items captured in their photos. Within the application, users can filter items by categories—such as tops, bottoms, jewellery, and more—and then mix and match them to create various outfits.

Google has stated that the feature is designed to assist users, and data regarding how users dress or what they wear is not shared with third parties, such as retailers.

The broader launch of the virtual wardrobe coincides with several other Google Photos updates. These include new ways to select, brighten, and share photos using a single command in Gemini Spark, enhanced tagging tools, and more AI-driven Remix templates for transforming photos.

For Android users, a new photo filter called “Moods” has also been introduced, allowing users to apply different aesthetics to their images, such as 35mm film looks, 2000s-era digital camera effects, and much more.
