Google Launches Offline 'Secretary' Replacement App, Free and No Internet Required
Google has quietly released an offline transcription app. The AI-powered application has launched for iPhone and is expected to be released for Android soon. According to TechCrunch, the app named “Google AI Edge Eloquent” will compete with popular transcription apps such as Wispr Flow, SuperWhisper, and Willow. Google’s transcription app can be downloaded for free and requires downloading the Gemma-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) model. In the new app, users can view the transcription process live. If users press the pause button, the app automatically filters out filler words like “emm” and “ahhh.” Another available feature is AI technology to note key points and convert transcription results into formal, short, or long versions. Users can disable cloud mode so that processing occurs only on the phone. However, local processing means the Gemini technology for “cleaning” transcription results is not available. Google AI Edge Eloquent can also import specific words from the user’s Gmail account, such as names of people and places or certain jargon, to translate speech into text more accurately. The “history” feature allows users to search for specific words and display data like words per minute or the number of words in each recording. In the App Store description, Google mentions the Android version, meaning the app will also launch on the Play Store. Eloquent is said to offer seamless integration with Android. The emergence of this Google-made transcription app is described as an experiment. Google is suspected of using the app to improve its AI speech-to-text models, which will then be released for all Android devices.
